The Journey of Light

The first essay that I wrote at Lasalle was about a splendid encounter with a friend whom always exists in our life but i have rarely talk with him until that time.....

I saw somebody have met my friend also.

This project is designed at the period after Adi Purnomo released his book “Relativitas” that showed the           attitude to put actual and rational reasons as the base of his design decision. It was a time when rationality is re-questioned, whether it is a helping tool to explore creativity or does it creates limitation to find another new possibilities.

It is a mix building between residential, working and art gallery that sometime is opened for public. Because the client is a photographer and an art collector (he sometime paints and sculpts), lights is an important element for him to do his works.

What possibilities are open when we are thinking about light in this context? What if we are letting the lights as the material that creates the space? What if we eliminate the “result” or “goal” or “any imagination about form and space” at the beginning?

So, we study about characteristic of light for the whole year and found some angles that relates to time. We study how the light could penetrate to the volume needed, by making some models. In one sentences it could be said like this: Letting all the observed phenomena (in this case sunlights that highlighted), to become the tool of the design.

SITE . SIGHT . VIEW

Space is three-dimension.
Space is empty.
Space is void.
Space is volume that contained by at least three planes.
Space has mass.

How can space be sensed, perceived and experienced?

We use our senses to sense the world, perceive it by our mind and experience it through our heart.
We listen to a song. We whisper its rhythm. We memorize its lyric. And we feel happy when listen or sing it again.
We stand on a hard shiny floor, touching the rough wall and see the light fill the room through the high windows.{Sensed}. The room is so bright, so clean and so high.{Perceived}. And this is when we understand there are something that we cannot describe yet it so big, so far and so beautiful. And that we start to float, to fly higher. And we feel peace and freedom.{Experienced}

Brief:

Research / Study / Analyze : structure of a natural object.
Apply to design an architectural form.
Adapt the form to a specific place

Outcome:

Recreate a structure that represent the natural object.


PINE CONE STRUCTURE STUDY


The seeds were located around the center core of the pine cone follow many spiral paths. The distances and angle ratio between the pine cone scales always follow the Golden Number : Phi = 1.618 and Fibonnaci Sequence 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34....
